Burano Needle lace

Needle lace is made on the island Burano in the lagune of Veneice.

Needle lace is made with thread and needle. Threads are sewed on following the drawing on the carton pattern. Between these threads the lace is made using several stiches. The most important stitch in needlace is the buttonhole-stitch.

The pattern can be hold in the hand while sewing, but is Burano it is pinned on a pillow. Underneath this pattern a piece of wood helps the laceworker to pick up the thread more easily by the needle. A further advantage is that the worker has both hands free to make the stitch and give the tension needed and do this in the right direction.

When you are lucky, you see a laceworker sitting and working outside in one of the collourfull streets of Burano. Perhaps it possible the buy the piece directly from the worker, like I bought this little butterfly.
