Hair jewellery from Sweden

As we travelled around in Sweden about 15 years ago, we visited the Värnhus in Mora in the province of Dalarna. This was a centre for crafts of that aera. I was looking for bobbin lace and wanted also to know if it still was made there. Making of hair jewellery

What we found was, although the way of handling was quite similar to bobbin lace, quite something different. It was made on a kind of pillow although it was made of wood with a hole in the middle.

In stead of threads hair was used, especially the hair ffrom the horse's tail. These are long, but tough and curly. To make them smooth weights were hung on the ends. To make the piece done smooth also a weight was hung there.

The technique was the following: a double stitch was made with two pairs, then the left pair was laid away and from the right a new pair is taken for the another double stitch. So on and on. The result is a cord, that can be laid in several forms. Hereof pendels, broches, etc were made.

This jewellery is to be seen on the above picture behind the maker.
