Drawing a simple Torchon pricking

Before we start, we have to think about the threads we are going to use. This is important in order to determine at what distance the pinholes are to be placed from each other. Assume we design for thread linen 60/2 or DMC cotton 80, the pinholes have to be placed horizontally 4 MM. from each other.

To reach that result we use the grid of Illustrator. We have to take care, that this has the right distance between the lines.
The grid is to be found under Preferences: Guides and Grid.
Where Preferences is found, depends which version of Illustrator you are using; in Illustrator 10 for Mac it is found under Illustrator.
The grid lines have to be every 2 MM. and the subdivisions on 1;
and select the Grid In Back.

Don't make the point for the pinhole too big, but do take the size you like. The point is to be made with the ellipse tool.

This is be determined on for example 0,5 MM. high and 0,5 MM. wide.

Copy the points at the previous determined corners of the grid.

When you have made a page with grid for your lace, you can use this on and on. So be careful not to spoil it. Before you make a patterns on this grid, you have to make a new document by saving it with a new name. This way your grid stays intact and are you able to use this several times.To download this grid.

Rename in the new document layer 1, on which the point are, to grid. Before we are going to draw the pattern, we make a new layer. In the pallet layers we click on the right arrow, then we choose a new layer. We name this layer "pattern".

In this layer we are going to draw the motive with the pen-tool.

At first we only draw the first motive. The next one we copy and paste it under the first one on the right spot. Be careful that the sharp corner of the zigzag are placed precisely on the points of the grid.

In order the make the pattern neat and good to follow we remove the point of the grid, we don't need. In order to avoid removing or altering the motive, we lock the pattern layer by selecting this layer in the layer pallet and click then on the lock beneath.

For the finished pattern to use see the page "kantbrief tussenzetsel".
