Hinojosa lace

Hinojosa lace has been made since 1927 in the same village. In this year Doña Concha Sanchez Arjona, a lady from Seville, who owned a large mansion in the village decided to use a part of her fortune for the education of girls from Hinojosa. Herefore she founded a workshop which got the name "Sindicato Femenino Católica de La Milagrosa" (Association of Catholic working women) . Here the general cultural subjects, religion and bobbin lace were taught. The intention was that the girls in the village would be able to provide for theirselves.

Doña Concha learned lacemaking from Doña Candida Garcia Irajudo from San Juan de Aznalfarache, a village near Seville. The latter has actually developed the Hinojosa lace. The patterns that were made in Hinojosa, were all of her hand.

The school or "workshop" continued until 1957. After that the lace was only made at home. Unfortunately, the market for handmade lace have deteriorated slowly but surely . Many workers left the village to find work elsewhere .

Fortunately the interest in the handmade Hinojosa lace is growing and more laces are ordered. Not enough for a worker to provide for herself completely, but enough to the lace alive.
