Drawing a Torchon edging with fans and spiders

When we are to draw a circular edging, we start to draw one motif. We have to do this very accurate. Otherwise we have to correct too much when joining the motifs.

We start opening the document with the grid of dots. Save this immediately as a new document with the option "save as". Because of this we are not working in the original document and leave the original grid intact for future use.

Before we draw the motif, we create a new layer. Then we can easily remove the excessive dots.

pattern layer

pen toolWith the tool “pen” we start to draw 3 straight lines at the lefthand side, 1 between two rows of dots and 2 lines between the next 2 rows. This indicates the straight edge on the outside with the two hanging pairs next to it. Together this is the edge.

Between the straight edge on one side and the fans on the other we make spider with 6 legs .For this we make two half-diamond openings in the grid of three dots to the right and left. We remove all the dots in that hole except the middle one.

half-diamonds

To design well defined, we use guides. Both guides are just above the center spot of the spin. This dot is thus only to the top in the motif.

oval tool

To indicate that in the openings a spider is to be made, we draw a little oval around the middle dot. This can be done with the tool “oval”, which can be found beneath the tool “square”. This oval can be drawn from the middle with the option- or alt key.

scissors tool
With the tool “scissors”, which is found under the tool “eraser” , we cut the ovals precisely on the guides. The half which is outside of the guides can be removed.

half ovals

Now the place of the fan is chosen. There is nothing special between the spider and the fan, so we leave the dots of the spider and those for the fan. So 2 diagonal rows. Beside the most outer dot for the fan we leave another dot.

opening for the fan

dots for the fanWe draw another guide through the deepest point of the fan. Just above this
guide we place just as many dots als there will be passive pairs in the fan;
in this case it will be 4. The most outer dot above is for the runners and the most outer passives.

circle for the fanUsing the tool “oval” we draw a circle
for the outside of the fan. The centre of the circle is the point of intersection of the guide throught the deepest point of the fan and the guide between the
most outer points. To draw the circle from the middle we use the option- or alt key. When we use beside the option key also the capital key the circle will be as it should be, circular.

outside of the fanOn the outer half of the circle we place the dots for the fan. Start with the dot in the middle straight oposite of the deepest point of the fan. The amount of dots on the quarter of the circle is the amount of dots on the diameter of the fan minus 1. In this case it is 4-1=3. So three dots above and three dots beneath the dot in the middle.

complete fanWith the tool “pen” we now draw the way of the runners in the fan, starting with the most outer dot above. The runners end at the the guide at the bottom before the most outder dot beneath.

When we finished this, we remove all the redundant dots around the motif; also those just below the guide at the bottom.

selected motifWhen only the motif is left, we select all and group it with the keys command and g. If we should have to replace it, there will be no risk of leaving one dot behind. The complete motif is now a whole.

We rotate the motif 90°, so that is standing. After this we drag it to the window “Brushes”, right below to
“New Brush”. In the reply window we choose “patternbrush”. In this window we also indicate, that the pattern should be stretched to join. We now see the motif appear in the window “Brushes”.

To complete the circular edging we choose the tool “oval” and draw a circle. Take care that no filling is selected. While the circle is still selected, we click on the “patternbrush” and look: the circle is made of our motif. If we drew the motif accurate, no openings are found between the motifs.
